Children with oppositional defiance disorder

It is simply a part of raising children when parents experience oppositional behavior. Children, even at young ages, begin testing their parents. Some children are defiant because they are hungry, tired, or upset. Some are slightly more defiant and will talk back, disobey, and defy their parent’s wishes. It can be stressful but it is normal. That is until it becomes completely disruptive to the family and even creates a hostile environment. When the child’s defiance begins to affect their social and family life, it is time for them to be evaluated by child psychologists. It is time to see if they have Oppositional Defiance Disorder or ODD.

ODD symptoms

Children who have ODD develop a combination of uncooperative, rebellious behavior that is characteristically directed towards authority figures. Children with ODD will have recurrent temper tantrums and argue intensely with adults. They will question the rules, blame others for their mistakes, and harbor resentment. They will seek revenge and speak cruelly about the ones who they believe caused the mistake. They try and upset people and are easily annoyed with a very spiteful attitude.

What to do?

If you feel that your child is presenting with symptoms of ODD, it is imperative for them to be seen and evaluated, so treatment can begin. Then the entire family can be a part of the new parenting techniques that will be needed to create a safe environment for the entire family, and the child will be able to get along with other children and the adults in his life.
