During the filming process of Rust, Alec Baldwin accidentally shot a cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, using the gun that is used for the props. The American actor is going to face with the charge of involuntary manslaughter to the cinematographer, causing the death of the subject due to the shot on the fatal area. Mary Carmack-Altwies, the district attorney for Santa Fe county, said that the actor and the person who is responsible for the armors in the movie, found guilty due to the failure of keeping the area safe from the props that should be properly checked before being used in the movie filming process. Not only that, the movie armorer is also found guilty for handling the gun to the actor.
“Certainly, he’s charged as an actor but also as a producer, he also had duties to make sure the set area was safe,” the district attorney mentioned the case to CNN. She also mentioned that there were also some cases that people were worrying about their safety, backed by the previous cases that there has been another accidental misfire causing to death before this case happened. Alec Baldwin, the actor who shot the cinematographer, should have checked the gun before doing improper action for the safety of people around him as she said.
However, after some discussion with the family of the victim, Alec Baldwin and Halyna’s family have finally reached a settlement for this case. Halyna’s husband said that all parties claimed that his wife’s death was an accident in the set. To the media, he said that he has no interest to engage in recrimination or attribution to blame Mr.Baldwin for his wife’s death. He mentioned that all parties believed that it was purely a terrible accident.
Mr. Baldwin posted in his social media about his reaction, saying that they are all pleased to announce that the settlement of civil case filed on behalf of Halyna’s Hutchins’ family. This incident was not just involving Halyna Hutchins, but also the Rust director, Joel Souza. He was injured from the shooting incident in the film set. He made a statement that he would devote himself for Halyna’s legacy and he wanted to make her proud with the film.
The chronology of the incident happened when Alec Baldwin was practicing to draw the gun for the scene in the movie. Sadly, the gun he was using for the practice had a live ammunition that he did not realize. He mentioned a few times that he did not pull the trigger when the incident happened. However, the district attorney mentioned that FBI found the evidence that Mr. Baldwin indeed pulled the trigger, which causes distinction of the claim and prosecutors waited to move forward with the charges until the report is received. The investigators are still looking for the evidence for how the live bullet was found in the gun for the props, said Ms. Carmack-Altweis. On April 2020, the state finally issued a penalty for the production company of $136,793 due to the indifference of management to dangers which involved the handling of gun causing the death of Ms. Hutchins.
