Troyal Garth Brooks (born February 7, 1962) is an American country music performer who dominated Billboard Top 200 throughout the 1990s. According to the Recording Industry Association of America in 2006, Brooks was the third best-selling artist in US history. He has two Grammy Awards and twenty four Billboards Music Awards to his name. Despite this, Brooks' name remains relatively unknown outside of America.
Originally from Oklahoma, Brooks started composing and performing music professionally at the age of 25. In 1987, he met popular country singer Trisha Yearwood. Although both were married, rumors swirled in the country music world for the next decade about a connection between the two stars. Yearwood and Brooks continually denied these reports until they finally acknowledged their relationship in 2005.
Beginning in 1988, Brooks became the most popular and successful musician in country music history. His massive and spectacular concerts drew crowds of viewers that previous generations of country musicians could only dream of. Eight of his albums topped Billboard's Top 200 Sales Charts at different times for a total duration of 51 weeks - the third-highest record behind Elvis Presley and The Beatles. He has become known for his heartfelt ballads such as "If Tomorrow Never Comes" (1989) and "The Dance" (1990).
Although purists of country music reviled Brooks for his work that teetered on the edge of the despised "pop", it had become quite evident by the mid-1990s that Brooks' vibrant shows had irrevocably changed the face of country industry. The singer's decline began in 1999 when he shocked his fans by releasing an album of alternative rock under the pseudonym Chris Gaines. Accompanying this album, was a film where Brooks presented himself to audiences without his perennially cowboy hat and other accessories, which drew much mockery. Finally in 2001, at age 39, Brooks announced his retirement from show business.
